SENATE TO ANNOUNCE RESULTS OF JUNE 12 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION; PAY ALLOWANCE ACCRUED TO MKO KINGIBE .

The Senate today resolved to announce theresults of the June 12 Presidential election, which was acclaimed to be the best conducted so far in Nigeria’s history and was won by late Chief M.K.O Abiola.

The lawmakers while deliberating on the legality of declaring June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day instead of May 29th also resolved to ensure that all allowances and entitlements to the families of Chief M.K.O Abiola and Prof. Baba Gana Kingibe be made available to them.

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu had earlier opined that there was need for the constitution to be amended for June 12 to be declared as Democracy Day.

In his remarks to the matter, Senate President Bukola Saraki said it was unfortunate that the country had not given Abiola & his family the recognition that they truly deserve.

“We recognize the fact that the recognition of Chief MKO Abiola and his contributions have been long overdue. We must recognize this good intention. There might be imperfections in how it was implemented, but let us take the good intention behind all of this.

”I am sure that all of us, in one way or the other, have had the opportunity to interact with the man & we felt that the country has not given him & his family the recognition that they truly deserve. Let us leave it that Chief MKO Abiola represented all of us,” Saraki said.

Additionally, the senate resolved to declare June 12 a public holiday and that 29th May should remain the day for the inauguration of newly elected officers (President and all Government officials)
