HEAVY DOWNPOUR SACKS MANY RESIDENTS IN BAYELSA COMMUNITY

HEAVY DOWNPOUR SACKS MANY RESIDENTS IN BAYELSA COMMUNITY

Many residents of Oporoma Community which happens to be the Headquarter of Southern -Ijaw Local Govenment Council, in Bayelsa State especially those living in low marshy areas, were sacked from their homes, yesterday, in an early morning downpour that lasted for over seven hours .The rain started at about 3.30a.m. and continued till about 10.30a.m  on Tuesday 19th of June,2018.forcing civil servants and school children to stay at home. While some families were seen draining water from their homes using pumping machines, others resorted to scooping with containers.
In some areas, residents were overwhelmed by the volume of the surging water and watch helplessly not knowing which of their valuables to salvage.  renowned woman who is popularly known as Madam Summerset expressed sadness over the development in interview with The a media Analyst Comr Elaye Igbian Warifagha Yagila saying the havoc wreaked by the flood was as a result of  the houses that were built on the carnals which has blocked passage of water, she noted.

According to her that  sometime in the month of May 2018.members of the community agreed that any house that built on a dreinage will be demolishe in order to prevent flooding, thereafter the buildings that were affected was the house of the  Paramount ruler  of the community and his allies HRH Amb. Ayibakuro Peter Ogidi-oke and  that was how the issue of demolition ended .

Therefore i am calling on the National Emergency Agency and the Southern-Ijaw Council boss chief HON Kia Ebidoughebofa Nigeria come to our aids because the speed with which the water is spreading is alarming. There was nothing we could do to salvage our valuables,” she said. The worst affected areas are Oporoma INEC office, the enternance of the Council Secretariat and as well as major roads.etc.
