NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS CALLS OFF STRIKE

NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS CALLS OFF STRIKE

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its nationwide strike.

This announcement was made on Sunday by the NLC President Ayuba Wabba.

He said the strike is being called off as a result of the firm and formal assurance of the Federal Government to reconvene the tripartite committee on the new minimum wage.

The  Labour Congress had commenced the nationwide strike on Thursday, September 27.

The NLC President said the industrial action was due to the refusal of the Federal Government to reconvene the meeting of the tripartite committee to enable it to conclude its work on the new national minimum wage.

AMBODE MIGHTY FACE IMPEACHMENT FOR HIS INSISTENCE TO RE-CONTEST

AMBODE  MIGHTY FACE IMPEACHMENT FOR HIS INSISTENCE  TO RE-CONTEST

By TarakiriNews

A stakeholders’ meeting of the party called by the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is underway as stakeholders are currently gathered at the APC secretariat along ACME road where Tinubu’s arrival is still being awaited.

Most roads leading to the secretariat were blocked with many vehicles diverted to alternative roads within Ikeja axis.

The all-important meeting is expected to seal the fate of Ambode who is being rivaled by one of his aides, Babajide Sanwo-Olu who has continued to receive a groundswell of support and endorsement.

36 out of the 39 APC lawmakers in the House of Assembly endorsed the candidacy of Sanwo-Olu this Saturday even as there are speculations that the governor might face impeachment for his insistence to re-contest despite losing the goodwill of party stakeholders.

57 local council chairmen had earlier queued behind Sanwo-Olu. And to further brighten his chance, another APC governorship aspirant, Babafemi Hamza earlier on Saturday stepped down for him.

The Director General of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Campaign Organization (BOSCO), Mr. Tayo Ayinde in a statement welcomed the decision of Hamza to step down for Sanwo-Olu.

“As a group, we wish to profoundly acknowledge and commend Dr. Femi Hamzat for his show of sportsmanship to our common cause.”

“We once again use this opportunity to urge our teaming party members to come out in their numbers to vote Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the flagbearer of our party for the 2019 Gubernatorial Election”, he said in a statement.

WAKE UP AND TAKE YOUR COUNTRY BACK IN 2019- FATHER MBAKA TELL NIGERIANS

WAKE UP AND TAKE YOUR COUNTRY BACK IN 2019- FATHER MBAKA TELL NIGERIANS

Vocal Catholic priest and Spiritual Director of Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka at the weekend called on Nigerians to wake up and reclaim the country from wicked and mindless politicians seeking to destroy it due to their greed and selfishness.

Mbaka, who made a scathing criticism of political leaders in the country across party lines said both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have betrayed and squandered the confidence and trust of the people.

“Those of you keeping quiet should check oh. If we allow these people the situation will remain like this till we all die. Our leaders are wicked and Satanic. I have looked around and noticed that all of them are selfish. They are not thinking for the wellbeing of the people they should be leading and taking care of. And wickedness will attract evil to them.

“Wicked to the level of allowing their subjects to be dying of hunger, dying out of poor medical assistance and when any of them is sick they will fly abroad, shame! When you are hungry you go and eat Mama-put and your children are dying in the house, why don’t you cook the food in the house?

People of God stop being silent even if the priest is silent, because they can punish the Bishop, but they cannot they cannot punish you people. Your destinies are at stake, wake up and say no to this evil nepotism in the name of democracy.

“Our leaders have failed us, and all of them visit abroad when they are sick and come back. One day God will raise a government. One day God will raise a government that will punish all the past leaders that have not done well.

“Like this case of Buhari and co, all this money they said they have recovered, where is the money, from who and who did they recover the money from? When will the recovered money be made use of? Who actually is fooling who?

“By Monday now we will celebrate independence; how many years, 58? A man who is 58 years and still wearing pampers! Zero power stability. Go to this Kenya of yesterday, go to this Ghana of yesterday; and the worst is that most of what they use to develop their wealth come from this country. What wickedness.

PDP PRIMARIES: DICKSON, MARK TASK ASPIRANTS TO DISPLAY SPIRIT OF SPORTSMANSHIP

PDP PRIMARIES: DICKSON, MARK TASK ASPIRANTS TO DISPLAY SPIRIT OF SPORTSMANSHIP

Bayelsa State Governor, Honourable Seriake Dickson and former Senate President, Senator David Mark have reiterated the need for all  presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party  to close ranks and work for the overall success of the party.

The duo made the call when the former Senate President and  presidential aspirant led his campaign team on a consultative visit to Government House, Yenagoa over the weekend.

A press release signed by the Special Adviser to the governor on Media Relations, Fidelis Soriwei quoted Governor Dickson as saying that the PDP could not afford to disappoint Nigerians as the citizenry is looking up to the party to effect the desired change in leadership in 2019.

Governor Dickson, therefore, urged all the aspirants to pursue their quest of becoming the PDP standard bearer with the spirit of sportsmanship and readiness to obey the overriding will of the party at all times.

While acknowledging the  contributions of the former Senate President towards nation building, the Governor described as a true patriot who played a pivotal role in stabilising the polity, especially during the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan's administration.

His words. You are one of the most qualified Nigerians to run for the Presidency of this country. You know this country very well as somebody who has gone through the entire mill. Let me therefore once again commend you for throwing your hat into the ring because our country is currently in dire need of experienced, tested and broadminded leaders like you.

"I want to also commend you for standing with and for us the Ijaws at very difficult and trying times. When we needed support, in your characteristic manner you never let us down throughout the tenure of our brother. I saw how you deepen our democracy and stabilized the national assembly by mobilising support for former President Goodluck Jonathan. And as a people who are known for rewarding those who stand by us, you will never find us wanting.

"Like I have told every other aspirant that has come here to canvass for support, there is need for all of you to develop a sense of sportsmanship and oneness. You don't need to be bitter against one another because the most important thing every well meaning Nigerian expects from the opposition is to bring about a credible leadership that can move this nation to an enviable height."

Governor Dickson, who assured that he would work closely with other critical stakeholders to ensure a transparent and credible party primaries, urged the presidential aspirant to carry the Bayelsa and the Niger Delta along in the country's scheme of things when the PDP clinches power in the forthcoming general elections.

Earlier in his remark, the former Senate president and PDP Presidential Aspirant, Senator David Mark appealed to Bayelsa delegates to vote for him, noting that as someone who had worked in the old Rivers State, his indept knowledge of the problems of the Niger Delta places him in a better position to address challenges confronting the region.

The Benue-born politician, who described himself as the most suitably qualified aspirant to fly the PDP flag in the 2019 presidential election, however pledged to abide by the outcome of the party primaries billed to hold on the 6th of October 2018.

According to Sen. Mark, "I have been in politics since 1998. I know the problems of the Niger Delta I have worked here  when the whole this area was under the old Rivers State. As far as I am concerned, what you are asking for is not a difficult thing to do. You are saying you lay the golden egg and therefore should be allowed to eat it. I want to assure you that I have the political will to enable you eat this Golden Egg you are laying when I become the President of this country.

"Your Excellency, You have worked very hard to make Bayelsa a progressive state. You have also been able to stem the high rate of insecurity in this area. You worked hard to stabilize and keep our party going. I will join you in reducing the unemployment rate in Bayelsa and even fix the insecurity in this country which has become more worrisome. Today, Nigeria has become so divided, it has never been like this before."

OSUN RERUN: PDP REJECTS RESULTS, SAYS IT’S BLACK DAY FOR NIGER

OSUN RERUN: PDP REJECTS RESULTS, SAYS IT’S BLACK DAY FOR NIGERIA

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party met in Abuja on Thursday over the conduct of the rerun governorship election in Osun State.

While rejecting it, the party also said that the Thursday election was one of the worst days in the history of Nigeria.

It described the election as a black day for the nation.

The National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, spoke at an emergency meeting after the meeting of members of the PDP National Working Committee.

He lamented that Osun State was put under siege and the citizens’ right trampled upon by security agents, whom he said were backed by both the All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission officials.

He expressed concern that if what took place in Osun State was what would take place in 2019, then the future of Nigeria’s democracy “is bleak and the nation sliding into crisis.”

He said, “What we have witnessed in Osun shows clearly that the All Progressives Congress is not ready for an election and we are afraid that President Muhammadu Buhari will not hand over if he loses the election next year.

“Today, we are all aware of the rerun election in Osun State as we address the press conference. We, the members of the National Working Committee, have reviewed what has happened from the distribution of materials to the actual voting in some of the units and wards.

“We found that Osun is under siege. Therefore, today is a black day for Nigeria.

“We would think that it is a state or some units, but if you look at what has transpired so far from Ekiti to Osun State, Nigerians are groaning in pains especially the Osun people.

“The right of the citizens to be able to come out and vote had been trampled upon and the entire state and the wards and units have been seized by the security agencies who were acting on behalf of the APC to make sure the election is rigged by all means.

“We are sad that if this is what is going to take place in 2019, then the future of Nigeria’s democracy is bleak and we are sliding into crisis.”

Secondus challenged INEC to rise above what happened in Osun and declare the PDP candidate as the winner of the election.

He also called on the commission to immediately cancel the elections in all the units where security agencies seized the Permanent Voter Cards of PDP members and also where their members were prevented from voting.

In his reaction, the Deputy National Chairman (South-West), Dr Eddy Olafeso, noted that security agents colluded with the APC people by allowing those wearing uniform bearing the APC governorship name to vote.

He alleged that in Orolu and Garage Olode and some of the units, the PVCs of PDP members were seized and INEC members of staff were induced with cash, which he said they could not refuse.

2019: WHAT GOD SHOWED ME CONCERNING NIGERIA, ANOTHER CIVIL WAR – OLUMBA OLUMBA

2019: WHAT GOD SHOWED ME CONCERNING NIGERIA, ANOTHER CIVIL WAR – OLUMBA OLUMBA

By John Owen Nwachukwu

Founder of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, BCS, Olumba Olumba Obu, has revealed what God showed him concerning Nigeria and another civil war in the country.

Olumba, who spoke in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa, ahead of the centenary celebration of manifestation of the order, Olumba Obu, said God told him there will not be another civil war in the country.

He said the centenary torch which would be lighted in Yenagoa would herald peace, prosperity and development to Bayelsa State.

He said that when the torch was lighted in Port Harcourt, Rivers State it halted the bloodletting that would have occurred during the local government elections.

“The plan of God as far as Nigeria is concerned is a mystery only known to him. I cannot tell you whether there would be crisis or not or whether Nigerians would kill themselves.

“One thing that he, however, made clear is that Nigeria would not experience a Civil War.

“During the Orkar Coup, he said that was going to be the last military coup in Nigeria and that there would never be a successful coup in Nigeria.

“He told us to go to Port Harcourt; Rivers State to light the torch and that there would be no crisis.

“On the 2019, our father is not a pastor, a general overseer or prophet who starts predicting what would happen or who would win.

“What is going to be come of Nigeria in 2019 is best known to God and he has not made it known to any of us.”

AHEAD OF APC GOV PRIMARIES :COMMUNICATIONS MINISTER, ADEBAYO SHITTU SCREENED OUT OF APC GOV PRIMARIES OVER NYSC CERTIFICATE

AHEAD OF APC GOV PRIMARIES :COMMUNICATIONS MINISTER, ADEBAYO SHITTU SCREENED OUT OF APC GOV PRIMARIES OVER NYSC CERTIFICATE

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declined to clear the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, for its governorship primaries.

Shittu, who is interested in becoming the party’s governorship candidate in Oyo State, was screened out of the primary for not having a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.

The National Working Committee of the party took the decision based on the report of the party’s Governorship Aspirants Screening Committee, the APC said in a statement.

Also, the Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Aisha Alhassan, was screened out of the primary. Alhassan had been the party’s governorship candidate in Taraba State during the 2015 general elections.

No reason was given for the decision not to clear her.

The Women Affairs Minister had, however, generated controversy in 2017 when a video of her visit to a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who was then in the APC went viral.

She later told the BBC Hausa Services that even if President Muhammadu Buhari seeks a second term, she would still support Abubakar.

Others who were not cleared for the APC governorship candidates are Osiobe Eric Okotie (Delta), Ejikeme Ugwu (Enugu), Ibrahim Mohammed Mera (Kebbi), Danladi Envulu-Anza Halilu (Nasarawa), and Abubakar Mamma Jiya Maaji (Niger).

Apart from Shittu, no reason has been given for the decision not to clear some aspirants.

US, EU, UK OBSERVERS ALLEGE INTERFERENCE, INTIMIDATION IN OSUN SUPPLEMENTARY ELECTION

The missions of the United State, the European Union, and the United Kingdom have faulted the supplementary election held in Osun State on Thursday.

According to the missions, which observed the poll, incidents noted during the process are very are worrisome.

The missions said this in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Thursday night.

“We witnessed what appeared to be incidents of interference and intimidation of voters and heard reports of harassment of party monitors, journalists and domestic observers,” US Consul-General John Bray, who spoke on behalf of the missions, told journalists.

“We are very concerned by these reports and we will be checking with stakeholders to determine the facts. We call on all stakeholders to remain calm.”

The supplementary election which held in seven polling units had commenced early with electoral materials and officials arriving early at the units.

Unlike Saturday’s poll which was considered peaceful, there were several arrests, reports of intimidation and manipulation.

Some election observers said they were prevented from moving freely or gaining access to polling units, while the Independent National Electoral Commission also expressed concern about reports it received.

JUST IN : PASSENGERS WERE FORCED TO SWIM AS PLAN MISSES RUNWAY AND CRASH TO LAGOON IN MICRONESIA

JUST IN : PASSENGERS WERE FORCED TO SWIM AS PLAN MISSES RUNWAY AND CRASH TO LAGOON IN MICRONESIA

By Elaye Igbian Warifagha Yagila

Passengers were forced to swim for their lives Friday when an airliner ditched into a lagoon after missing the runway on a remote Pacific island and began sinking. The Air Niugini Boeing 737-800 was attempting to land at Weno airport in Micronesia but ended up half submerged in Chuuk lagoon after the accident on Friday morning.

Within minutes, locals scrambled a flotilla of small boats to pluck the 35 passengers and 12 crew from the water.

The Air Niugini plane hit the water short of the runway while trying to land at Chuuk Island in the Federated States of Micronesia on Friday morning.

Striking footage from the scene shows people being rescued in boats from the half-submerged plane, in images reminiscent of the 2009 crash-landing in New York City known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.”

The airline said in a brief statement everybody on board the Boeing 737 plane was able to safely evacuate, and the airline was making all efforts to ensure the ongoing safety of the passengers and meet their immediate needs.

The airline did not immediately say how many people were on board the plane, where it was traveling from, or what caused the crash. Local news reports indicated between 40 and 50 people were aboard.

Air Niugini said everyone on board was safely rescued

Air Niugini is the national airline of Papua New Guinea and has been in operation since 1973. The fleet includes Boeing 767 and 737 jets for international routes, according to the airline, as well as Fokker F-100 aircraft, Q400 and Dash 8 aircraft for challenging local terrain.

Micronesia, located north of Australia and east of the Philippines, is home to just over 100,000 people.

It has close ties with the US under an agreement known as a compact of free association.

In 2009, both engines on a US Airways jet failed after striking a flock of geese during takeoff from New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Pilots Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles safely landed their powerless plane on the Hudson River.

The airline said the plane, which was involved in a collision with another aircraft earlier this year, had “landed short of the runway”.

Remarkably, it reported no serious injuries among those on the plane, which was making a scheduled stop on its way from the Micronesian capital Pohnpei to Port Moresby.

“Air Niugini can confirm that all on board were able to safely evacuate the aircraft,” the firm said in a brief statement.

FG MEETS WITH NLC LEADERSHIP OVER STRIKE WARNING

FG MEETS WITH NLC LEADERSHIP OVER STRIKE WARNING

The Federal Government is currently holding a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

The meeting follows a warning by the union to commence an indefinite strike starting from midnight.

NLC President in a briefing on Wednesday directed all labour unions and civil society groups to embark in the strike.

According to the NLC, its decision to embark on the strike is as a result of the Federal Government’s refusal to reconvene the Tripartite Committee on a new National Minimum Wage.

They (NLC) had last Thursday resolved to commence an indefinite nationwide strike after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued on September 12, which elapses today.

The organised labour is also alleging that its request to reconvene a meeting of the Tripartite Committee was not met, and the leaders have cautioned the Federal Government against foot-dragging on the issue.

NLC is demanding an upward push from N18,000 to N56,000 as minimum wage.

BREAKING: FINALLY, OMISORE TELLS SUPPORTERS WHO TO VOTE FOR

BREAKING: FINALLY, OMISORE TELLS SUPPORTERS WHO TO VOTE FOR

By Nwafor Sunday

The governorship candidate for Social Democratic Party, SDP, in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, Wednesday urged his supporters to vote for any party that believes in what their party stands for.

According to him, good governance, social justice and accountability are what he (Omisore) and his party intends to achieve in Osun if he had won the gubernatorial election.

Recall that after the inconclusive declaration of the last Saturday’s election in Osun by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, both PDP and APC chieftains have been storming his residence to solicit for his support.

In view of that therefore, Omisore in a statement obtained by Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday averred, “Osun state has always been a stellar example of democracy where the people have consistently and freely expressed their franchise to determine who governs them.

“This should remain so. Osun people have shown that it is not business as usual. It is a positive deviation from what was hitherto the norm.

Osun election : High-wire intrigues as PDP, APC dig in for votes

“I am telling my people that they should go with any political party that believes in what we in the SDP stand for; good governance, social justice and accountability. I have already detailed how we planned to restore Osun to the path of good governance through the five thematic pillars in the manifesto I shared during the electioneering. I will not negotiate for personal gains and abandon my people.

“My alliance is with the people of Osun state irrespective of the political party they belong. I want my people to be treated with the dignity they deserve. I desire that they have a government that will be accountable to them. I want them to experience the good governance the founding fathers of this state envisaged. I have told the parties that have solicited for my support to approach the electorates and ask for their mandate as I have assured them that I will not coerce them for political or social power. It is because I have kept my promise that has made me enjoyed their unalloyed support all these years.

“As highlighted in SDP manifestos, the five thematic pillars the SDP had hoped to implement to improve governance, eliminate financial reckless and reposition the economy of Osun state include: Economic management and accountability; Professionalism and performance; Equity in access to service; Local content and innovation and Security.

“To this end, he has said to all Nigerians that this is the centre point of his campaign and “democracy we both fought for and believe in. It is the right and democratic freedom of people to choose by their own free will. Their votes should not be coerced by money, vote buying, intimidation in form of militarisation, political and social power.

“Their voices of demand for good governance, accountability and human dignity should continue to be heard as well as salaries paid. All these are what I stand for and which the SDP had promised the people all through our electioneering campaigns. They are still paramount to me as we collectively chart the way forward for the governorship elections rerun in Osun state.”

GOV DICKSON SIGNS MEDICAL UNIVERSITY ESTABLISHMENT BILL, TWO OTHERS INTO LAW.

GOV DICKSON SIGNS MEDICAL UNIVERSITY ESTABLISHMENT BILL, TWO OTHERS INTO LAW.

By TarakiriNews

Bayelsa State Governor, Honorable Seriake Dickson on Monday assented to the Bayeksa State Medical University, Yenagoa Establishment Bill to support the training of medical personnel in the state that will man the various health infrastructure the state government has put in place.

Governor Dickson, who signed the bill alongside the Corporate Social Responsibility and New Yenagoa City Development Agency bills into law in Government House, Yenagoa, said the 350-bed Melford Okilo Memorial Hospital is to be transformed into a teaching hospital, to cater for the training needs of medical personnel both within and outside the state.

He said plans are on to construct a classroom block, in addition to an administrative block to make it more befitting, noting that, the facility would be completed before the end of his tenure to address both primary and tertiary healthcare needs of the people.

According to him, "the facility will now be used, not just as a hospital, but as a teaching hospital to train students. We believe that would be an optimal way of utilising that wonderful facility into which so much money has been sunk.

"With the increased investments in healthcare infrastructure, including hospitals and health centres that we are building in all local government areas and wards, we need to lay more emphasis on the training of manpower because very soon, this state will be a centre of excellence for medical health."

Governor Dickson, who also commented on the Corporate Social Responsibility Law, decried the attitude of companies operating in the state, noting that, they do not make significant contributions to the development of the state.

While urging companies to comply with the law, the Governor disclosed that, the proceeds would be channeled to funding the state Health Insurance Scheme, Security and Education Development Trust Fund.

"I have said time and time again that companies operating here are not contributing enough to our collective development. By this law, every company (big or small) doing business in Bayelsa is liable to obey the CSR Law because its proceeds will be used to fund health, education and security.

"Let me also make it clear that, this law is not imposing any tax obligation on any individual  but it is targeted at corporate bodies to ensure that they contribute a percentage of their budget to enable us expand the scope of support we are giving to provide affordable healthcare delivery as well as quality education to our children."

On the New Yenagoa City Development Agency Law, Governor Dickson expressed optimism that, the legislation would serve as a catalyst in driving his administration's vision of building a new Bayelsa, where development activities would be controlled in line with best practices.

To this end, he said his administration has spent about N200 billion in providing world class infrastructure in Yenagoa, the State capital, including the construction of roads and bridges, Governor's office complex, adding that, a second flyover bridge would have been constructed at the Tombia- Etegwe area, if it had not been for the economic recession.

"In the state capital, it is very clear for everyone to see all the dualized roads you see are dualized by the restoration government. At the last count, we have spent close to N200 billion and I'm not even including the new Yenagoa City, which itself is one of the most ambitious real estate development that any state government can undertake. I want to use this opportunity to enlighten the public to jettison the propaganda spurned by people envious of the achievements of our government."

Presenting the bills, Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Konbowei Benson said, the 3 bills were transmitted to the house for consideration and passage between June 12 and August 8th, this year.

COURT NULLIFIES IMO DEPUTY GOVERNOR’S IMPEACHMENT

A High Court sitting in Owerri, the Imo State capital has nullified the impeachment of the Deputy Governor of the state, Eze Madumere, by lawmakers.

The court’s nullification is on the ground that Mr Madumere’s impeachment did not follow due process, therefore it is illegal.

The presiding judge, Justice Benjamin Iheka, who made the announcement on Tuesday, insisted that he (Madumere) remains the Deputy Governor of the state.

Justice Iheka faulted the Chief Judge of Imo state Pascal Nnadi and the Attorney General the state Miletus Nlemadim, of the process of the impeachment.

According to Justice Iheka, the Chief Judge did not comply with section 188 subsection 5 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

It (constitution) stipulates that the Chief Judge must set up a 7-man panel of inquiry within 7 days but on the contrary, the Chief Judge did after 9 days, according to the constitution makes the impeachment process invalid, null and void.

Mr Madumere was impeached on July 30, 2018, by 19 out of the 27 lawmakers on allegations of absence without reasons for a period of three months and a failure to perform constitutional duties like attending state executive and state security council meetings.

CHIEF (HON) KIA EBIDOUGHEBOFA NIGERIA EMERGES AS THE BEST PERFORMING LOCAL GOVERNMENT CHAIRMAN IN NIGERIA.

CHIEF (HON) KIA EBIDOUGHEBOFA NIGERIA EMERGES AS THE BEST PERFORMING  LOCAL GOVERNMENT  CHAIRMAN  IN NIGERIA.

By Elaye Igbian Warifagha Yagila

ABUJA -The 18th Edition of Nigerian Local Government Chairmen Merit Award tagged “LOGMA 2018” at the National Merit House Maitama, Abuja, witnessed  Chief Hon.Kia Ebidoughebofa Nigeria emerged as the one of the "Best Performing Local Govenment Chairmen of the year in Abuja yesterday.

The strategic role of local government administration and the need for its autonomy for effectiveness, had in recent times received a boost with lawmakers in both state and the National Assembly advocating for its autonomy. Being the third tier of a federal system and the closest to the people, experts argued that sustainable development of any society is hinged on the level of poverty index, infrastructural and human development, health care delivery prevalent at the local areas.

The quest to enhance the standard of living at the grassroots through effective, accountable, responsible and prudent administration of local government areas no doubt, are the driving force of the Nigerian Local Government Chairmen Merit Award (LOGMA) which had found Chief Hon. Kia Ebidoughebofa Nigeria worthy of an award.

The coorespondance of Tarakiri News learnt that, the award which was instituted in the year 2000 was meant to stimulate fair competition for service delivery among local government chairmen and equally celebrate their sterling leadership qualities.

further noted that local government is unfortunately the most vilified tier of government in the country with some chairmen being subjected to abuses and reduced to errand boys by some state governors.

However, in the midst of all these sociopolitical intimidation and economic deprivation, the organiser of the merits awards expressed delight that some chairmen have lived up to their expectations of delivering dividends of democracy and as such deserve an award to inspire others to emulate them on the quest for purposeful leadership at the grassroots.

Lamenting on how award conferment has been bastardized in the country, the Management of Nigeria Merits Award said inter alia that “the selection process that led to the final awardees are quite rigorous. This is because of the abuse to which awards has been subjected to in the country.“The first stage was the call for nomination in the media. The various nominees were scrutinised and shortlisted ones were published for further inputs of the members of the public. The council chairmen that emerged at this stage were thoroughly   verified of their claims.

“It is pertinent to mention that after the final list was published, some names were dropped base on genuine petitions against some nominees by members of the public. Therefore, the local government chairmen being presented for the conferment of the 18th edition of the LOGMA could be said to have passed the litmus test of responsible leadership, gathered by the coorespondance of Tarakiri News.

Chief Hon. Kia Ebidoughebofa Nigeria whose admirers fondly call "Mr Project"was on the historic and epoch-making occasion being conferred with the award of the Best Performing Local Government chairman. The visibly elated Administrator who dedicated the award to the Almighty God and the good people of Bayelsa State noted that it is another testament that the New Direction administration of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson is on the right path to improve the socioeconomic wellbeing of the people.

NO DIVISION IN PDP, GOV DICKSON INSISTS

NO DIVISION IN PDP, GOV DICKSON INSISTS

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr Seriake Dickson, said yesterday that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains strong, in opposition to bits of gossip that the party is separated.

He called the 12 presidential aspirants of the party to abstain from disparaging utterances as they campaign ahead of the party’s national convention.

A statement by the governor's Special Adviser on Media Relations, Mr. Fidelis Soriwei, quoted Dickson as saying that it was pertinent for the presidential aspirants to avoid the use of words that could inflict injury on party cohesion and its strength as the country moves closer to the 2019 elections.

The Bayelsa Governor, who was Chairman of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, noted that utterances apparently focused at critical organs of the party and the governors should be avoided in the interest of a repositioned PDP determined to wrest political power from the ruling party.

He said there was no division inside the organs of the party and its governors as all the basic stakeholders were focused in the moves to  produce a viable presidential candidate through a credible convention acceptable to all members.

The governor said the publication in some quarters depicting division within the PDP,  its organ and governors were false and ought to be completely disapproved.

According to him, the governors, the BoT, the National Working Committee were a piece of the board that is saddled with the duty of creating a possibility of producing a candidate for the party in a free, fair and credible process.

“I wish to urge all presidential aspirants of our great party to avoid disparaging remarks that are suggestive of division among the critical organs of the party and the governors. No such division exists.

“The fact is that the governors are working with the National Working and BOT of the party to midwife a credible process that will produce a strong and acceptable candidate for the PDP as we move closer to the battle ahead,” he said.

He urged aspirants with complaints to take advantage of a forum for discussions between the governors, the party and the aspirants which was created during a meeting of the governors in Abuja last week.

Dickson said that a similar meeting of the governors, the aspirants and the critical organs of the party was being planned for next week in Abuja.

He insisted that the party was committed to a fair process that would prepare the ground for its victory in 2019.
